The stability of laminar flows, the transition from a laminar to a turbulent flow regime and the turbulence itself are subjects of great interest in fluid dynamics, for their importance in atmospheric sciences, environment sciences, aeronautics, combustion and different industrial applications, as well as for the physics of the related phenomena. These areas of fluid dynamics still present today considerable challenges due to their complexity and the complexity of the tools used for their study.
In order to encourage the discussion and the training of new scientists in hydrodynamic stability, transition and turbulence, in 1998 the first Transition and Turbulence Spring School (EPTT) was organized. The first EPTT took place at the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME) in Rio de Janeiro, jointly organized by IME and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Since then, it has been an event of the Associação Brasileira de Engenharia e Ciências Mecânicas (ABCM) of great success where, today many participants that were students in the first editions of the event, are now contributing to it by giving talks and short courses on the latest editions. That demonstrates the success of the chosen format for this event.
The objectives of the EPTT were kept the same along the last 18 years, which are: (i) the training of high level human resources for basic and applied research in stability, transition and turbulence; (ii) the interaction between researchers of different Brazilian and international institutions. In particular, besides the focus on aerospace engineering, in 2016 we are trying to integrate the areas of meteorology and wind engineering as a way to increase the synergy between the two groups. The relationship between these two areas is treated by a science branch called Wind Engineering, that studies problems such as wind energy, pollutant dispersion, wind impact on structures and atmospheric effects in aerospace applications, among others.
The EPTT 2016 will take place in the city of São José dos Campos, jointly organized by the Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço (IAE), the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), the Instituto de Estudos Avançados (IEAv) and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE). The 10th EPTT will follow the same format of previous editions with (i) invited talks by international scientists about recent research topics, (ii) short-courses given by Brazilian researchers, (iii) technical sections with the presentation of Brazilian and international research work. Additionally, in this edition visits to different research laboratories around the São José dos Campos area will be organized.
