The present project is concerned with the development of a numerical methodology for the analysis of turbulent flows due to the interaction of rocket-engine exhaust plume gases with the ambient air. The major motivation for the work is the design of large satellite launch vehicles, which is one of the primary responsibilities of Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço (IAE). In general, the existing best-practice guides for launch vehicle design indicate that acoustic loadings should be treated as critical loads both at take-off conditions and in the transonic regime. Therefore, the long term objective of this development is to create the capability of predicting such design loads for the vehicles under development at IAE.
